Eine Arbeitsplatzbeschreibung, Stellenbeschreibung oder Job Description beschreibt für gewöhnlich die allgemeinen Aufgaben, die Funktionen, spezielle Aufgaben und Verantwortung, die einer bestimmten Stelle oder Position zugeschrieben sind.
Vorzugsweise sollte sie nicht nur eine Beschreibung der einzelnen Aufgaben beinhalten, nebst der Verantwortung für den Vollzug der Aufgaben, sondern auch die Kompetenzen, die für die Erfüllung der Aufgaben notwendig sind.
In leitenden Positionen wird auch beschrieben den der Positionsinhaber über- beziehungsweise untergeordnet ist, die so genannte Leitungsspanne. Eine Job Description entfällt für gewöhnlich auch eine Auflistung der für die Position notwendigen Skills und Fachqualifikationen, sowie das Basisgehalt.
Die Erstellung einer Job Description erfolgt zumeist aus einer vorher vollzogenen Jobanalyse, die die einzelnen Aufgaben einer Position, deren Einbettung in die Organisationsumgebung und vorrangige, nachrangige Aufgaben sowie deren sequenziellen Abläufe untersucht. Personalabteilungen betrachten dabei auch das Fachwissen, Skills (soziale Kompetenz, Kommunikationsfähigkeit usw.) und legen fest, über welche davon der Positionsinhaber verfügen muss, und über welche er verfügen sollte.
Gut ausgestaltete Arbeitsplatzbeschreibungen beschreiben auch, ob die Position Personalverantwortung, -führung erfordert, wie die Verhältnisse zwischen der Position und anderen Stellen innerhalb der Organisation sind als auch die Anforderungen der Stelle an die Führungsqualitäten des Positionsinhabers.
Zur Vorbereitung auf ihre Bewerbung, insbesondere für international operierende Unternehmen, kann es von Vorteil sein zu wissen, wie Job Descriptions in der Praxis ausgefertigt sind.
