I'm OK. You're OK. Having a Positive World View!

One of the most important concepts in transactional analysis theory is ‘life positions’. Life position is a model of the way we perceive life, ourselves, and the people we meet and interact with. In transactional analysis theory, life position is described as the mental and behavioral pattern which is used to justify the way we perceive the people around us and our own selves and the decisions we make about them and ourselves.

Life positions are used by the transactional analysis theorists to understand various behavioral attitudes as well.

Life positions are divided in four main classes. These positions were first defined by Franklyn Ernst who diagramed these life positions in a grid form with four sections – each section representing a particular life position. This diagram or graphical classification of life position is also known as OK Corral. Ernst was the originator of OK Corral. The grid has expanded and many more life positions have been introduced now, though psychoanalysts generally agree on the primary four life positions.

I’m O.K. You’re O.K. - The Good Life Position

I’m O.K. You’re O.K. is a short form of “I am okay, you’re okay. We are making good progress.” As it is obvious from the description, I’m O.K. You’re O.K. is the best life position to be in. In this position, people think positively and seem happy and content with what they have. “I’m O.K. You’re O.K.” people are in the “get on” position.

They are mostly confident about themselves and are satisfied and happy with their life and work. Because they think positively about themselves and about people around them, they interact and collaborate in a positive way. There exists mutual respect between them even if there’s a disagreement about something. These people believe in a positive philosophy. “I’m O.K. You’re O.K.” position is also known as the “good life” position.
